China is now the “good guy” when it comes to AI, not Donald Trump’s USA, where the technology is being pursued in dangerous ways in the “Wild West”, a former UN and British government adviser has told MPs.
Prof Dame Wendy Hall, who was a member of the United Nations AI Advisory Panel and wrote a report on AI for Theresa May’s government, told the House of Commons Economic and Trade Committee that China was supporting multinational attempts to introduce global AI governance, unlike America, which had sparked a race between profit-hungry companies betting on hype.
“China is doing great work in AI, and in fact they are acting as the good guys at the moment because the US is completely against any regulation and talking about global governance,” said Hall, director of the Web Science Institute at the University of Southampton. “It’s all Maga. It’s all we’re going to win at any cost.”
