Ask ChatGPT, Google Gemini, or Perplexity to summarise today’s news and you will get a confident, well-formatted answer in seconds. What you will not always get is an accurate one. Two separate rounds of research from the BBC, carried out with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), found that AI assistants misrepresented news content in roughly half of tested responses, and a third independent study from the Columbia Journalism Review’s Tow Center found that eight AI search tools collectively got more than 60% of news queries wrong. For Irish readers who increasingly turn to AI chatbots instead of a search engine or a newspaper website, that is a serious problem worth unpacking properly.
