British consumers warned about AI chatbots giving inaccurate financial advice

Research has found that artificial intelligence chatbots are giving inaccurate money tips, offering UK consumers misleading tax advice and suggesting they take out unnecessary travel insurance.

Tests with the most popular chatbots found Microsoft’s Copilot and ChatGPT recommended breaking HMRC investment limits for Isas; ChatGPT incorrectly stated that travel insurance was mandatory for visits to most EU countries. and Metas AI gave incorrect information about how to claim compensation for delayed flights.

Google’s Gemini recommended withholding money from a contractor if a job failed, a move that consumer group Which? This risks exposing the consumer to a claim for breach of contract.

Which? said its research, which asked 40 questions of the competing AI tools, “revealed far too many inaccuracies and misleading statements for comfort, particularly when relying on AI for important questions such as financial or legal issues.”
