Blanchett joins stars accusing tech companies of AI “theft.”

Hollywood stars Scarlett Johansson and Cate Blanchett, breaking Bad Creator Vince Gilligan and the band REM have signed an open letter accusing tech companies of “stealing” copyrighted artistic works to train AI models.

The Human Artistry Campaign’s open letter “Stealing Isn’t Innovation” calls for companies to partner “ethically” and not “steal.”

Other signatories include actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Looper, Inception) and Olivia Munn (X-Men: Apocalypse, Magic Mike), musicians Aimee Mann, MGMT, Common, Cyndi Lauper and Simon Le Bon as well as author Jonathan Franzen.

The letter states: “America’s creative community is the envy of the world, generating jobs, economic growth and exports.”

“But instead of respecting and protecting this valuable asset, some of the largest technology companies, many of them backed by private equity and other backers, are leveraging the work of American developers to develop AI platforms without authorization or consideration…
