US Senator Bernie Sanders emphasized the importance of international cooperation in regulating AI during a panel discussion on Capitol Hill on Wednesday alongside two leading Chinese scientists.

As startups and tech giants, particularly in Silicon Valley and Beijing, struggle to advance and scale their artificial intelligence, Sanders is among the AI skeptics pushing for protections.

During the discussion, Sanders raised concerns about the potential impacts of widespread AI use, including misinformation, loss of privacy and social isolation among youth who rely on chatbots.

The Vermont senator also expressed concern about the existential risks that automation could pose to American society, leading to a possible rise in unemployment if companies favor automated workers over human workers. The panel’s researchers also presented the prospect of superintelligent systems that operate outside the boundaries of their designers’ instructions.
