U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders sharpened his recent criticism of artificial intelligence on Sunday, explicitly linking the financial ambitions of “the world’s richest people” to economic uncertainty for millions of Americans – and calling for a possible moratorium on new data centers.
Sanders, a Vermont independent who caucuses with the Democratic Party, said on CNN’s “State of the Union” that he is “afraid of a lot of things” when it comes to AI. And the senator called it “the most consequential technology in human history” that will “transform” the United States and the world in ways that have not yet been fully discussed.
“If there are no jobs and people aren’t needed for most things, how do people get income to feed their families, get medical care or pay rent?” Sanders said. “There has not been a single word of serious discussion in Congress about this reality.”
