AWS attracts VMware Cloud on AWS customers through cost-effective migration incentives

AWS is running a promotion for VMware Cloud on AWS users who migrate 80 or more VMs to AWS, offering $400 in credits per VM. For 40 to 79 VMs, users will receive $200 per VM. The promotion lasts until December 31, 2024 and includes migrations to Amazon EC2. AWS promises optimized performance, improved security, reliable operations, and cost reductions with the migration, but users must run each VM for at least 720 hours after migration to qualify.

The announcement from AWS signals a shift in the future of the VMware Cloud on AWS service. While it is currently available through VMware/Broadcom, it is no longer offered through AWS. Although no official end date is specified for the promotional period of December 31, 2024, sources suggest that the service will eventually be discontinued. VMware Cloud on AWS, a joint venture between VMware and AWS announced in 2017, aimed to combine the strengths of both services, allowing for easy scaling and migration between local and public clouds. However, changes within VMware, including Broadcom’s acquisition and subsequent shift in focus to VMware Cloud Foundation, have altered the landscape.

In early April, VMware announced that it would be migrating its workloads away from AWS to Google Cloud, including both customer-facing solutions and internal tools. This move signifies a mutual shift away from each other for both VMware and AWS. Broadcom’s emphasis on VMware Cloud Foundation over VMware Cloud has led to significant changes in VMware‘s portfolio, frustrating some customers while potentially benefiting others.

Overall, the dynamics between VMware, AWS, and Broadcom are evolving, with potential implications for users of VMware Cloud on AWS. The ongoing promotion by AWS offers an incentive for users to migrate their VMs to AWS, but the broader context of changes within both VMware and AWS suggests a larger shift in the industry that users may need to navigate in the coming years.
