In today’s column, I explore an interesting and controversial new twist related to psychotherapists and their clients. The deal is this. Clients are increasingly using generative AI and large language models (LLMs) to receive mental health advice. The person then chooses to discuss the advice given by the AI with their human therapist.
The surprising step that is now emerging is that the client asks their therapist to directly use the client’s chosen AI chatbot. In other words, instead of simply telling the therapist what the AI said, the client asks the therapist to log in to the AI and speak to the AI directly.
Is this a good idea or a bad idea, and what should therapists do when asked to proceed in this way?
