I have been a truck driver since I was 18. I hauled a load across state lines the first day I was legally allowed to do so – my 21st birthday – and have held a commercial driver’s license (CDL) for over 30 years now.
Workers like me have heard a lot from media elites about how our jobs will one day be irrelevant. We have been told that technology will replace us and that we need to acquire new skills to make a living.
But now the world’s technology leaders – those driving the AI revolution – insist that people like me are actually the foundation of the technology that is shaping the future. Microsoft President Brad Smith believes a new generation of skilled craftsmen is needed to empower programmers and data scientists, and in January Nvidia boss Jensen Huang predicted that people who work building technology facilities will soon earn six-figure salaries.
