APJC’s AI Leap: A 2025 Cybersecurity Retrospective

As 2025 comes to a close, I find myself reflecting on the extraordinary pace and complexity that define the Asia Pacific, Japan, and China (APJC) region. APJC is a market unlike any other – diverse, distributed, digitally ambitious, and now, leading the world in AI adoption. This year, that unique combination created both unprecedented opportunity and new forms of cyber risk.

Early reports from Cisco Talos were clear that our region faced a uniquely complex 12 months. Unknown attackers targeted Japan-based organizations, with ransomware incidents increasing 1.4 times compared to the previous year. At the same time, organizations across APJC accelerated their AI journeys, with 23% of employees using public GenAI tools for work on personal devices. AI moved from experimentation to critical infrastructure almost overnight.

This dual reality has defined 2025: extraordinary innovation paired with extraordinary risk.
