Anthropic will deactivate its most advanced AI models after the US restricts foreign access

Anthropic said it would “abruptly” disable its most advanced AI models for all users after the U.S. government ordered it to block access to the models to foreigners, citing national security concerns.

The company received an export control order to block access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 to all foreign nationals without receiving specific details about the national security concerns, Anthropic said in a statement.

Anthropic understands that the government believes there is a method to circumvent or “jailbreak” a protection measure that would prevent Fable 5 from being used to identify software vulnerabilities, the company said.

The order comes just as an earlier dispute between Trump administration officials and IPO-bound Anthropic showed signs of easing within parts of the U.S. government.
