Anthropic suggests that the world’s leading artificial intelligence companies find a coordinated way to halt the development of advanced AI systems, warning that technology is improving so quickly that it risks causing humans to lose control.
The company behind the Claude chatbot said in a blog post on Thursday that given the increasing speed of modern AI in performing tasks, “it would be good for the world to have the ability to slow down or temporarily pause its development.”
Anthropic said its internal research institute plans to study the issue in collaboration with others and “take action” to build the systems for a credible slowdown or pause without getting closer.
Anthropic rival OpenAI argued for a different approach in a report published Wednesday, saying that “democratic governments — not private companies acting alone — must ultimately set the rules, protections and accountability mechanisms.”
