Anthropic has announced a fresh $5 billion investment from Amazon, bringing the total Amazon investment in the company to $13 billion, with Anthropic committing to spend over $100 billion on Amazon Web Services (AWS) over the next 10 years in return. The deal includes up to 5 GW of new computing capacity and specifically covers Amazon’s Trainium2 through Trainium4 chips, with Anthropic also securing the option to buy capacity on future Amazon chips as they become available.

The structure mirrors a deal Amazon struck with OpenAI just two months ago, when it joined a $110 billion funding round contributing $50 billion, with both deals partly structured as cloud infrastructure services rather than straight cash. At the centre of this arrangement are Amazon’s custom chips, Graviton and Trainium, with the latest Trainium3 having been released in December, and Trainium4 not yet available at the time of the announcement.
