Amazon releases TorchNeuron to pull AI workloads off Nvidia chips – Startup Fortune

Nvidia’s grip on PyTorch workloads has one less excuse behind it. AWS’s new TorchNeuron lets you swap in Trainium chips with a config change, not a rewrite.

Amazon announced TorchNeuron at AWS re:Invent in December 2025, shipping an initial private beta as part of the Neuron 2.27 SDK release under the Apache 2.0 license on GitHub. The pitch is blunt: write the same PyTorch code you’d run on an Nvidia GPU, point it at Trainium2 or Trainium3 instead, and change a configuration line rather than rewriting your training stack. According to AWS’s own announcement, that’s the whole point. Amazon has spent years trying to convince developers its custom silicon is a credible alternative to Nvidia. This is the clearest attempt yet to remove the excuse that switching is too much work.

Here’s why that excuse existed in the first place. Nvidia’s moat was never just the chips: it’s CUDA, the software layer underneath them, plus everything built on top of it over nearly two decades -…
