IQM Garnet, a 20-qubit quantum processing unit (QPU), is now accessible through Amazon Web Services (AWS) in the European Union, marking the first quantum computer available via the AWS cloud in this region. The Finnish quantum hardware startup IQM, based in Helsinki, has partnered with AWS to offer this quantum processor, expanding the reach of Amazon’s quantum services to end users in its AWS Europe (Stockholm) region for the first time. Additionally, this collaboration allows IQM’s quantum computers to be accessed on-demand through the cloud with AWS pay-as-you-go pricing.

Jan Goetz, co-CEO and co-founder of IQM, expressed excitement about working with a global technology company like Amazon and highlighted the opportunity to expand their offerings globally while collaborating with major end users worldwide. This joint offering is seen as a significant advancement in quantum cloud computing, enabling cloud users to experiment with new algorithms and use cases to drive business development.

Affordability is a key factor for startups working with quantum algorithms, as the current noisy and error-prone quantum computers are still in the early stages of development. IQM Garnet is primarily utilized by quantum algorithm engineers for developing intellectual property (IP) around compilers, algorithms, and quantum error correction schemes. The highly homogeneous design and cutting-edge fidelities of IQM Garnet allow users to effectively scale algorithms to the full chip size. Additionally, IQM offers the Garnet at affordable prices, catering to the needs of the growing quantum algorithm startup scene.

IQM, known as Europe’s leading quantum hardware developer in superconducting qubits, plans to introduce a high-fidelity IQM Radiance 54-qubit quantum computer early next year. This advancement will enable users to extend quantum algorithms beyond what can be emulated by supercomputers. Looking ahead, IQM aims to launch IQM Radiance with 150 qubits in 2026, paving the way for commercial-scale applications in finance, automotive, life sciences, and chemistry.

Overall, the availability of IQM Garnet through AWS in the EU represents a significant milestone in the quantum computing landscape, providing greater accessibility to quantum technology for end users and startups. This collaboration between IQM and AWS highlights the ongoing advancements in quantum cloud computing and the potential for quantum algorithms to revolutionize various industries in the coming years.
