The federal government will set up an AI security institute that will begin work at the beginning of the new year and assess the challenges and opportunities of the new technology.
The operation will be fully funded in the December Mid-Year Economic and Fiscal Outlook (MYEFO), but costs will not be announced until then.
It will share information and support timely actions to address potential risks posed by artificial intelligence in public sector work and provide advice to the private and non-governmental sectors.
Industry, Innovation and Science Minister Tim Ayres said the adoption of AI presents significant opportunities for Australia.
This includes attracting investment and leveraging the capabilities of AI to improve work for Australians.
However, there must be a clear awareness of possible pitfalls that may come with the technology.
