AI traffic penalties total 0 million in driver fines in Perth and WA

Western Australians are expected to pay $440 million in additional traffic fines over the next four years, largely due to controversial AI-powered speed cameras.

According to the government, about 184,000 violations caught by the cameras have been reported since it started issuing fines in October last year.

However, Road Safety Minister Reece Whitby said fines had been reduced by 50 percent.

Looking at the longer period between now and when camera warnings begin in April 2025, he said the number of offenses has fallen by 80 percent.

Mr Whitby said that over a period of time the most common offense was drivers using their phones, followed by seatbelt breaches.
