AI-powered diagnostics spread across Europe | Digital clock observatory

Patient care, staff workload and operational efficiency are the top priorities for AI in European healthcare systems, with less focus on research or reducing inequalities.

AI-powered diagnostics are being rolled out across Europe, with France, Portugal, Hungary, Sweden and the Netherlands leading the way. The technology is used primarily in ophthalmology, radiology and dermatology and helps to shorten waiting times and relieve the burden on medical staff.

Some countries, including the United Kingdom and Italy, are using AI informally in a limited number of settings, while others, such as Spain, Poland, Belgium, Serbia and Ukraine, are still testing it.

A notable example comes from Slovakia, where AI software is automating organ contouring in radiation therapy, halving oncologists’ workload while ensuring compliance with modern international standards.
