Do AI browsers represent the future of surfing the World Wide Web? The AI industry definitely wants you to believe that it does, just as it promised that autonomous AI “agents” could automate tasks on your computer.
But right now they don’t seem to be all that helpful. The edge recently tested a number of these chatbot-integrated browsers and was completely unimpressed. A common theme was that the browsers were jerky and sometimes annoyingly slow. And despite AI’s promise of enabling incredible automation, using it required a lot of effort and trial and error.
“Regardless of the browser, I kept running into the same fundamental problem: you have to think extra hard about how to create the right prompt,” he wrote The Verge’s Victoria song. “Adding an AI assistant to a browser doesn’t magically define the way you interact with a chatbot.”
