Researchers at the University of Southampton have developed an artificial intelligence (AI) tool that can detect hard-to-see objects in patients’ airways better than experienced radiologists.

In a study published in npj Digital Medicine, the AI model outperformed radiologists in checking CT scans for objects that were not clearly visible on scans.

These accidentally inhaled items can cause coughing, choking, difficulty breathing, and can sometimes lead to more serious complications if not treated properly.

The results illustrate how AI can help doctors diagnose complex and potentially life-threatening diseases.

The research was conducted by Dr. Yihua Wang, Dr. Zehor Belkhatir and Prof Rob Ewing from the University of Southampton, in collaboration with researchers from Wuhan, China.

“These objects can be extremely subtle and easy to miss even for experienced clinicians,” said study co-first author Zhe Chen, a doctoral student from the University of Southampton.
