On Tuesday, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese finally unveiled Labor’s draft negotiating incentives for news media in Canberra. When tech giants negotiate commercial deals with media organizations to pay for journalism that appears on their platforms, a 2.25 per cent levy on those companies’ Australian revenues will be fully offset.
The announcement came more than two years after Facebook owner Meta backed out of contracts with Australian media companies under the Morrison government’s News Media Bargaining Code.
