AI didn’t destroy the Jeanswest brand…it was already dead

If you didn’t understand what the term “AI slop” meant, Jeanswest just did you a big favor. Its most recent advertising campaign, and I use that term in its broadest sense, has become the industry-wide reference point for what happens when marketers run headfirst into poorly crafted AI advertising.

The struggling fashion retailer – fresh from its second administration collapse and pivoting to an online-only business – recently posted two 20-second spots on Instagram. They show two blonde women walking on the beach and hanging out in a cafe, both wearing identical outfits.

The women were AI generated. Apparently. Painful. Her movements were blurry and unnatural. Strangely, they appeared to be the same person, only a few years and sizes apart. There was something cartoonish about their faces that screamed “I’m not really here” – and would occasionally dissolve into something semi-demonic for half a second before returning to an unreal catalog model.
