Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming medicine, from diagnosing diseases to accelerating drug development. His influence also reaches the world of sports.
In a recent editorial, we examined how AI could transform the way researchers, doctors and sports organizations detect, monitor and treat concussions, one of the biggest health concerns in contact sports today.
A concussion is a form of brain injury caused by a sudden shock, blow, or violent shaking of the head. It is difficult to diagnose because it rarely looks the same twice. Some athletes feel sick and dizzy; others don’t. Some lose consciousness, but about 90% do not.
There is a significant risk of head impacts and brain injuries in many of the sports we play and follow. Such injuries can result from a single serious impact: a false attack, a blow, a fall. For others, frequent impacts occur over many years, putting athletes at increased risk of developing Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s or other forms of the disease.
