An AI-powered trial of traffic cameras in North Perth has uncovered dozens of daily “near misses”, prompting plans for safety improvements at a busy inner-city intersection.

The City of Vincent analyzed and released data from a “near miss” AI camera installed at the intersection of Fitzgerald and Angove streets, which recorded an average of 38 near misses per day between February and April last year.

Using AI, the camera analyzes traffic in real time, tracks drivers’ vehicle speeds, measures distances between road users and identifies different types of transport such as cars, buses, bicycles and motorcycles.

The system will not be used for criminal prosecution or to impose fines. To protect privacy, faces and license plates are obscured in all film recordings.

99 percent of incidents recorded were right-angle near misses or potential “T-bone” accidents, and 81 percent involved drivers traveling faster than 25 mph.
