“AI believes it is above the law,” warn regional publishers – The Courier

Country Press Australia (CPA) has welcomed the Albanian government’s decision to rule out a copyright exemption for AI companies, but says urgent action is now needed to enforce copyright laws and prevent AI platforms from stealing regional journalism.

CPA president Damian Morgan said the damage to regional journalism was no longer hypothetical or distant, it had already happened.

“AI companies think they are above the law.

“They collect local news, paraphrase it, and deliver it back to users as answers, not links.

“The public still consumes journalism, but they never reach the publisher, never subscribe and never see a local advertiser.

“The reporting is ours, but the commercial benefit is taken by offshore technology companies,” Morgan said.

He added that regional publishers now operate fee-based or hybrid paywalls to fund journalism, but AI scraping routinely circumvents these protections, further threatening the economy…
