Darwin’s premier women’s cricket league is the first Australian competition to use an artificial intelligence (AI) umpire rating system.

During the opening rounds of the 2026 Darwin Division of a season, players were able to challenge leg-before-wicket (LBW) decisions using the full-track AI system.

It works via a high-resolution camera attached to an umpire’s chest and provides a decision on whether the tracked delivery would have hit the stumps.

The system will be tested for 12 months. It relies on records from about a million other thrown balls to calculate the approximate trajectory.

Arjun Verma, co-founder and CEO of Fulltrack AI, said the system uses a mix of models to make a decision.

“We (use) a 2D ball detection model (combined) with a physics model and use it to extract a full 3D ball trajectory,” he said.
