Western Australia’s new AI-powered road safety cameras have detected tens of thousands of violations and issued nearly $13 million in fines in their first month of full operation. The cameras, activated in October after a lengthy public education period, reported 31,855 violations for seat belt violations, cell phone use and speeding as of Nov. 8.
With 12,288 violations, cell phone offenses made up the largest proportion, followed by 10,285 drivers or passengers not wearing their seat belt correctly and 9,282 speeding violations. The figures come after an eight-month intelligence period during which the cameras identified more than 380,000 potential violations and issued 65,000 warnings in lieu of fines.
