As artificial intelligence (AI) advances rapidly, its capabilities and limitations are now being calculated in gigawatts of electricity by those at the forefront of the revolution – people like OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. This is because the data centers that power AI consume large and growing amounts of electricity.
US media recently reported that OpenAI, which operates ChatGPT, aims to build 250 GW of capacity by 2033. For comparison, the total installed capacity in India, the world’s most populous country, was 476 GW in June 2025.
At the basic physical level, this power hog happens because a lot of power is used to transfer data between the memory and the processor. If our devices could calculate and store data in the same place, it would dramatically reduce power consumption.
