Perplexity has open-sourced SPACE, the secure sandbox platform behind its Computer AI assistant, allowing developers to adapt the technology to build safer autonomous AI agents.
Announced on October 15, SPACE provides an isolated environment where AI agents can execute code and work with files while limiting access to sensitive information and the host system. Perplexity said the platform includes controls for network access, credentials and session recovery.
The company introduced SPACE in July, replacing its previous commercial sandbox provider. It said the platform has since powered all Computer sessions, handling millions of sandbox creations daily.
According to Perplexity, each SPACE sandbox runs inside a small virtual machine with its own operating system. The platform allows developers to pause and resume sessions, recover previous states and create separate workspaces to test alternative approaches.
Perplexity said these controls are designed to limit potential damage when AI agents behave unexpectedly or attempt to bypass restrictions. The company argues that safeguards built into the surrounding system are necessary because models cannot be relied upon alone to follow security rules.
In a published security evaluation, Perplexity reported no successful escapes from the virtual machine to the host system across 108 attempts. However, some tests initially bypassed network restrictions. The company said it fixed the identified weaknesses and that the attack methods…
