China is signaling that some of its biggest technology companies may be permitted to buy Nvidia’s NVDA newly released RTX Pro 5500 chips, potentially opening another channel for the U.S. chipmaker in the strategically important Chinese market.
Chinese regulators have asked companies including Alibaba BABA and ByteDance (BDNCE) about their plans to purchase the high-end graphics processors, The Information reported, citing people familiar with the matter. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has sought details including expected order volumes and how the chips would be used.
According to the report, officials have indicated to some companies that the purchases are likely to receive approval.
Any easing of Beijing’s restrictions could be positive for Nvidia NVDA by restoring access to Chinese customers at a time when U.S. export controls have sharply complicated its business in the country. China remains an important market for advanced computing hardware, while Alibaba
BABA, ByteDance (BDNCE) and other technology companies are spending heavily to build AI infrastructure. The size of the potential opportunity will depend on how broadly China approves purchases and whether U.S. export rules permit Nvidia to supply the chips.
