When Generation Z struggles with relationship problems, they increasingly rely on a software-based “brain” rather than friends and family.
Whether you use ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude, the consequences of relying on AI for “therapy” are severe.
According to a YouGov report, almost one in three Australians have shared their deepest and darkest relationship issues using these online tools.
Using AI as a secret confidante is particularly popular with Generation Z Aussies, with more than 55 percent having experienced emotional vulnerability with a chatbot at least once.
Interrelate relationship consultant Scott McLennan said AI responses could make young people feel “safe and reassured” but warned against making their emotional wellbeing dependent on software.
“It can’t detect power imbalances, so if you’re in a relationship where there’s coercive control, safety concerns aren’t necessarily taken into account,” he said.
