A senior Pentagon official said commercial AI contracts signed under the Biden administration contained sweeping operational limitations that threatened to cripple U.S. military missions in real time, including the ability to plan and execute combat operations.
Emil Michael, undersecretary of defense for research and technology at the Defense Department, described a moment of concern as he “reviewed the conditions for AI models that were already embedded in some of the military’s most sensitive commands.”
He did not mention the name of the AI provider whose contracts he examined.
