B Amazon project pits city against townships

CINCINNATI (Cincinnati Business Courier) – A tangle of scenarios is unfolding in Butler County over a $5 billion data center proposal from Amazon Web Services, planned on 601 acres in Madison and St. Clair townships currently up for annexation into the city of Trenton.

Officials believe the project is likely to happen. Unknown is in what jurisdiction, under what tax incentives, with what community benefits and how litigious the pathway will be going forward.

As it stands, the city and the townships find themselves in adversarial roles as they jockey for control over a substantial tax windfall. The city forecasts the project could result in nearly $10 million in annual tax revenue at full buildout starting in 2033.
