YouTube discontinues premium subscription when showing videos in 4K

It was annoying, but at least it didn’t last very long.

Sometime in September, YouTube required a premium subscription to play videos in 4K quality. The requirement was not imposed on all users, but it was met with some negative feedback from users who have seen it.

Now YouTube seems to have abandoned that idea — for now. In response to a recent tweet criticizing the feature, the official YouTube account said the company had “completely shut down this experiment.”
