We finally found something to bring both sides of the aisles together – cell phone chargers! That’s right, while it seems like all other causes are trapped in an eternal hellscape of purgatory and both sides are beyond stubborn, everyone seems to agree that a universal setup for your phone charger is a necessity. The news comes after the European Union’s decision to make the USB-C charging port the mainstream official option in 2024. In quick hopes of following suit, a group of United States Senators pick up the EU’s torch and carry it to the EU floors of the Capitol.
The Phone Charger Task Force is led by Ed Markey, Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders, who are investing in some new phones between the three and need to make some updates from their Motorola RAZRs if they want the USB-C port to work for them. But we digress. Corresponding The edge, the reason for the universal port is actually grounded in consideration as more environmentally and money-based, with the hope of reducing waste, environmental damage and consumer spending. In their letter, the trio asked their colleagues to help them “restore sanity and certainty when buying new electronics.” That’s what the older generation of Senate members were born for — helping other boomers buy their phones with confidence.
But seriously, buying a new phone is a hassle. If you’re an Apple customer, you know that almost every time you upgrade your product, there’s a new connector that renders your last phone charger completely useless. And then there’s that friend who’s riding in your car who needs an Android charger and is completely unlucky. When the bill is done, you can go straight ahead and hand your USB-C to them to bring their batteries back to life.
That being said, finding a universal phone charger is going to be an uphill battle. The big companies know they’re going to lose a lot of money if the law passes, which means they’re sure to put up quite a fight — in dollar bills — to ensure Chargers stay the way they are. The phone charger patriots added to their letter that they cited the hassle of “having to rummage through garbage drawers full of tangled chargers” to find the right device. I don’t know if it’s an impassioned Bernie Sanders reading this or just the idea that this is where we are politically in 2022, but this is an incredible statement.
So when can we expect the great phone charger transmission to happen? It’s very much in the air. If we base our timeline on the EU, they fought for years To bring about the charger change, and judging by the United States’ track record of issues in general, our children’s children may end up using a then-obsolete USB-C port. After all, Apple has announced that its plan is to make all of its devices fully portless at some point in the future. But sure, let’s focus on the rat’s nest of phone chargers instead harder problems.
