The Oculus Quest 2 It was a resounding success because the standalone virtual reality headset offers a lot of power and visual fidelity at a relatively affordable price – and now the gadget may be even more attractive.
Some dig up @ TheMysticle An “Android Apps For Quest” app has been released on Twitter in the Oculus Store, apparently initiating official support for installing some of the most popular and well-known apps on Android.
Android Central I got in touch with Oculus owner Facebook to ask if something was in the pipeline, but apparently Facebook “has nothing officially to share right now” – which may mean something is in sight or not.
What is clear is that the app for installing Android apps is not available for most users: if Facebook tests something along these lines, it looks like it has only enabled the functionality on a small number of devices at this point .
This was mentioned in our discord today and I just had to check to make sure it was real. It is save! These can be found under Preview apps in the store. The developer’s name in info is “Android Apps For Quest” and the website appears to be Oculus. Finally add popular apps pic.twitter.com/aUuTuTowLzMay 7, 2021
While you may never have tried it, installing Android apps on an Oculus Quest 2 is actually pretty straightforward. All you have to do is sideload them by downloading the APK file from the internet and then do the transfer using a Windows or Mac computer.
The software under the stunning 3D interface that you see when you turn the Oculus Quest 2 upside down is actually Android. Apps you downloaded from the page work just fine in a floating window that’s in the center of your view.
In other words, adding support for Android apps wouldn’t be a huge technical challenge for the Oculus engineering team. The benefits for users are obvious: you can check your social media feeds, messaging apps, and emails without leaving the VR world.
When Facebook officially supports Android apps for Oculus Quest 2, we will let you know. In the meantime, it looks like heavy sales of the headset will mean that It will take a while before we see that Oculus Quest 3 make an appearance.
