Microsoft has announced the release of the next Windows 11 update, known as 24H2, in its Release Preview ring. This marks the final stage of testing before the update becomes available to all Windows 11 users. Some of the new features included in this update are HDR background support, power saving modes, a sudo command for developers, integration of Rust in the Windows kernel, and more.

While the official rollout of the update through Windows Update is scheduled for later this year, users can access the final version through the Windows Insider option within the Windows Update section of Windows 11. By signing up for the Windows Insider program and selecting Version Preview, users can get early access to the update.

One of the key features of Windows 11 24H2 is support for HDR backgrounds, which allows users to use JXR images as wallpaper. Additionally, the update will adapt the wallpaper per screen for users with multiple monitors. Microsoft is also introducing a new power-saving mode that reduces system performance to save battery life on laptops, with the added benefit of being compatible with regular desktop PCs as well.

Developers will benefit from the inclusion of a built-in sudo command in Windows 11 24H2, which allows them to run elevated tools from a non-elevated console session. The sudo command can be configured in three modes: a new window, with input disabled, and online. The online mode is most similar to Linux sudo, while the other modes provide additional security measures.

Other notable additions in the update include the ability to create 7-zip and TAR archives in File Explorer, a scrollable view of the Quick Settings side menu above the taskbar, and an AI-powered Voice Clarity feature that eliminates background noise during calls or audio recordings. The Copilot assistant in Windows 11 has also undergone enhancements, with a dedicated button on the system tray and more commands for changing settings and activating Windows features.

Furthermore, Microsoft is introducing new AI-powered features that require a Copilot Plus PC to access. These Copilot Plus PCs will be available starting on June 18, with prices starting at $999.

Overall, the Windows 11 24H2 update brings a host of new features and improvements designed to enhance the user experience, increase productivity, and provide developers with more tools and functionality for their projects. Users can access the update early by signing up for the Windows Insider program and selecting the Version Preview option in the Windows Update settings.
