July 16 (Reuters) – Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi Corp (1810.HK) overtaken Apple Inc (AAPL.O) to become the world’s second largest smartphone manufacturer in the second quarter, market research company Canalys said in a report on Thursday.
According to the research company, Xiaomi took second place for the first time with a share of 17% in global smartphone deliveries, 3% more than in the previous quarter.
Global smartphone shipments rose 12% in the second quarter, led by Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) with a share of 19% and Apple with a share of 14% in third place.
The average selling price of Xiaomi phones is around 40 to 75% cheaper compared to Samsung or Apple, said Canalys Research Manager Ben Stanton.
The company’s shipments rose more than 300% in Latin America, 150% in Africa and 50% in Western Europe, the report said.
