XenServer Returns with a Fresh Citrix Hypervisor Rebrand and a Delicious Three-Host Free Offer

Cloud-Software-Group-owned XenServer has released XenServer 8, which is essentially a rebranded version of Citrix Hypervisor 8.2 CU1 with updated features and patches. The new product supports software-defined data centers, GPU virtualization, and trusted virtual platform modules for running Windows 10, 11, and Server 2022. XenServer offers trial, Standard, and Premium versions, with the trial edition being limited to three hosts similar to VMware’s retired free ESXi version. XenServer has introduced socket-based licensing to track customers accurately, given its past struggles with customer identification. Existing Citrix Hypervisor users can avail free promotional licenses for up to 10,000 Premium socket licenses until June 25, 2025, the end-of-life date for the Citrix product. XenServer’s strategy and competition plans remain unclear amidst the server virtualization market changes resulting from Broadcom’s acquisition of VMware. Requests for information from XenServer regarding its future plans have gone unanswered, with hopes of clarity and competition in the near future.
