WSAZ Investigates | Google’s request for tax abatement on proposed data center approved

SCIOTO COUNTY, Ohio (WSAZ) – Google’s request for tax abatement on the company’s proposed data center in Franklin Furnace has been approved.

The Scioto County Commission confirmed Thursday Google is the company that approached the county for tax abatement on a 500,000 square foot data center they want to build in the area.

The abatement was approved by Scioto County commissioners on Thursday.

Commissioners say that means should Google choose to move forward with buying the property and building the center, they would only be paying only 25% of what their property taxes would be for 15 years.

The abatement agreement would also include a payment in lieu of taxes of $500,000 annually and additional compensation based on total square footage, once completed by the developer.

Commissioners say if the project becomes reality, local entities that receive tax money will not be losing any less money than what they are receiving now.
