Enabling image-based AI systems such as smart glasses to capture and analyze videos of medical appointments could save time and improve doctors’ notes compared to audio-only AI scribes, according to an Australian study.

Audio-based AI scribes that record and process medical appointments to produce detailed summaries are becoming increasingly common in healthcare, but researchers are beginning to explore potential uses for multimodal AI that can also analyze images and videos.

The Flinders University study, published in npj Digital Medicine found in February that an image-based AI scribe “significantly improved documentation accuracy” for visual tasks and reduced errors by ensuring more important information was captured.
