Every player at this summer’s World Cup will have their own physically correct “AI avatar” to be used in VAR decisions.

The innovation, which digitally scans each player and allows height to play a role in future offside decisions, was part of a package of technological measures announced by FIFA President Gianni Infantino during his keynote address at the Consumer Electronic Show in Las Vegas.

Infantino described the upcoming World Cup, which will feature 104 games in the United States, Canada and Mexico, as “the greatest show ever on planet Earth” and said the AI avatar will “ensure” more accurate offside decisions are made.

“AI-powered 3D avatars will ensure precise player identification and tracking,” Infantino said, describing it as “a major advance in semi-automated offside technology, providing great images, faster decisions and a clear understanding for everyone.”
