- Apple is expected to release its first mixed reality headset next year.
- Meta is also working on a similar device, building on its existing products under the Reality Labs branding.
- It’s likely that companies will compete in smart wearables and smart speakers as well.
With Meta-rebranding, Facebook could be heading for a direct conflict with Apple in several industries. A new report sheds light on ongoing projects at both companies and how these could lead to potential competition between the two technology giants.
Apple and Facebook have not seen each other on an equal footing and often publicly express their rejection of each other’s guidelines. This rivalry could take on a new form in the future as both companies are now working on intelligent products for the home and on functions related to augmented reality. The work in progress was highlighted in Bloomberg’s latest “Power On” newsletter by Mark Gurman.
Gurman predicts in his newsletter that the competition between Apple and Meta will increase in the future. He writes that both companies are working on their own AR devices, smartwatches and smart devices for the home. While neither Apple nor Meta have left any mark on these areas with their products, Gurman makes it clear that the intention on both sides to conquer these markets is now stronger than ever.
As an example, Gurman mentions that Meta is currently working on a mixed reality headset called Project Cambria. At the same time, Apple is also developing an advanced mixed reality visor that was often speculated about in Gurman’s previous newsletters. Meta’s headset is expected to be for the masses, while Apple will be selling its own device at a high price higher cost and likely to launch it in the next year.
Aside from the mixed reality headsets, Meta can also collide with Apple in the smartwatch segment. As pointed out by Apple Insider, Gurman notes that Meta may be pursuing its own line of smartwatches that could be loaded with features related to health and communication.
Apart from the upcoming products, Meta is already competing with Apple in the segment of smart devices for the household. The company has its own range of video telephony devices under the Portal brand. The latest products in the series are Portal + and Portal Go, which were launched in September this year. Essentially, the devices offer services very similar to Apple’s HomePod and HomeKit, which Apple will undermine in the future.
According to Gurman, however, Apple will soon expand its offering in this area with new products. Gurman indicates that Apple is already working on a set-top box with a built-in loudspeaker and a video telephony device similar to the portal.
So it is clear that both Meta and Apple are targeting the same segments and will ultimately compete in the product market of those areas. It is still open who will have the upper hand.
