Apple held his Autumn event was today, and the stars of the show were the M1 Pro and the M1 Max, which was announced for the new MacBook Pros. We even have new AirPods and word on macOS Monterey. But everything was calm on the displays. The hope for a larger iMac with Apple Silicon for the 24-inch model announced in April was not rewarded, and the Apple Pro Display XDR is still the only standalone monitor from Apple. If you’ve waited for today’s event to help you choose the next screen to run macOS, we can feel your pain. We can’t force Apple to release new displays, but we can round up some non-Apple PC monitors that are worth considering if you need something now.

But let’s get something out of the way first. Nothing can really compete with the iMac at the moment in terms of screen resolution and processing power. Each display listed below is just a monitor; There are no all-in-one PCs here.

5K alternatives

One of the biggest advantages of the iMac and Pro Display XDR is their ridiculous pixel count. The iMac has what Apple calls 4.5K resolution (4480 x 2520). And the Pro Display XDR claims 6K or 6016 x 3384. No resolution is common, and 5K (5120 x 2880) options have more pixels than the iMac (14,745,600 versus 11,289,600 pixels). However, the pixel density that affects how sharp the picture looks is determined by the size of each monitor.



For $ 1,300, 27MD5KL-B. from LG offers a resolution of 5120 x 2880 in a 27-inch screen. Because the iMac has a smaller screen, its pixel density is higher – 218.7 pixels per inch (ppi) versus 217.6 ppi – but you have to get really close to notice the difference, if you do this at all. You are more likely to notice the slightly larger size of the LG (27 inches diagonal versus 23.5 inches).

Both the LG 27MD5KL-B and the iMac claim up to 500 nits of brightness. Both also claim to cover the DCI-P3 color space, whereby the LG should achieve 99 percent. In addition, the monitor works with macOS, so you can optimize the monitor settings such as brightness and volume of macOS.

You get a Thunderbolt 3 port with 94 W Power Delivery and three USB-C ports (Gen 3) instead of the two to four (depending on the configuration) USB-4 ports on the iMac.

Okay, that’s not a perfect 5K. Since this is an ultrawide (32: 9 aspect ratio) screen, the resolution will be different. 5120 x 2160 corresponds to 11,059,200 pixels, which is only slightly below the count of the iMac. The pixel density is lower at 163.4 ppi, but the display is also larger than the iMac.

The 450-nit display isn’t quite as bright as the iMac (and much darker than the Pro display). You do get USB-C, DisplayPort, and, unlike Apple’s displays, HDMI, though that’s limited to 3840 x 2160 resolution.

The PS341WU currently goes for $ 1,000.

As with the MSI display above, the LG 34WK95U-W means sacrificing some resolution (5120 x 2160), but you get an impressive 98 percent coverage of the P3 and a slightly higher contrast claim (1,200: 1) than the average IPS -Screen . Again, the screen is a bit darker than an iMac, but with a screen this big, 450 nits should be enough for most indoor environments.

The display costs around $ 1,300, and Thunderbolt 3 makes things Mac-friendly.

Pixel-heavy ultrawides

If you’re looking for lots of pixels, ultrawides are a great way to preserve them while also gaining lots of screen real estate. The pixel density is much lower than the Apple monitors, but you may be willing to sacrifice some of it for an immersive screen.

There are numerous 5120 x 1440 ultrawides available, but if you want to get closer to the brightness and color of Apple displays, take a look at the Samsung 49-inch CRG9. It’s massive what makes its $ 1,200 price tag more digestible, but that also means the display is harder to find. It takes up to 1,000 nits of brightness and 95 percent of P3. However, there are only HDMI, DisplayPort and USB-A connections here.

if you can find it, on the other hand, the Philips 499P9H has an integrated USB-C docking station. At a claimed 350 nits, the brightness is not as high as the above displays, but the VA panel claims three times the contrast (3,000: 1) than the typical IPS panel.
