in case you missed it Patch day in January 2022 came and went bringing new updates for Windows11 and Windows 10. But while the updates helped rid Windows of numerous vulnerabilities, they also had the unforeseen consequence of disrupting some PC users’ VPN connections.
Windows administrators Reddit report that the issue affects SonicWall and WatchGuard connections, among others (via Beeping computer). The message users are presented with when attempting to connect reads: “The L2TP connection attempt failed because the security layer encountered a processing error during initial negotiations with the remote computer.”
It’s worth noting that this unintended side effect of Patch Tuesday doesn’t affect all VPN users. Rather, it seems to affect those who use Windows’ built-in VPN client.
