Continuing on from my previous Insteon posts above Setting up Home Assistant Windows Portable (HassWP) and cheap PCs as servers for Docker/Insteon.
This post is a guide for anyone who wants to get Home Assistant Windows Portable running on a PC running Windows Home.
In my original HassWP post, I installed Home Assistant on my work PC and it didn’t even occur to me that I was running Windows 11 Pro. A reader pointed out that you need Hyper-V, which isn’t available on Windows Home.
However, getting this to work is possible, and it’s not too difficult.
If you’re looking for a permanent solution to keep your Insteon devices running, I highly recommend investing in dedicated hardware that will run as a server and keep Home Assistant running 24/7. I would avoid a large desktop, especially with current electricity costs; Instead, use a small form factor/mini PC (or a RPi4 if/when they become available again.
