IBM and The All England Lawn Tennis Club have introduced a new feature for the Wimbledon digital experience, called ‘Catch Me Up’, which utilizes generative AI match data from IBM’s WatsonX platform to keep fans updated on players to watch as they progress in the Championship. This feature will display pre- and post-match player cards with AI-generated player stories and analysis, personalized based on user preferences, location, and myWimbledon profile.
Pre-match content will include recent performance analysis and win probability predictions, while post-match content will feature key statistics and highlights, along with longer daily game summaries. The ‘Catch Me Up’ feature was created using IBM’s Granite Large Language Model and will be monitored by the All England Club to maintain the Wimbledon editorial style.
In addition to ‘Catch Me Up’, generative AI will be used to provide coverage of a wider range of matches, including wheelchair events, as part of a redesigned digital match center called IBM Slamtracker. The Slamtracker will offer vignette-based match previews and post-match reviews for both the ladies’ and men’s individual matches.
Chris Clements, digital product leader at the All England Club, expressed the organization’s commitment to enhancing the Wimbledon experience, both in-person and digitally, using generative AI to provide personalized content to fans globally. Jonathan Adashek, senior vice president of marketing and communications at IBM, highlighted the innovative use of generative AI to deliver compelling storytelling and insight-driven content to fans, showcasing the positive impact of technology like WatsonX in digital experiences.
The Wimbledon Championships are scheduled to take place from July 1 to 14, 2024, offering tennis fans a comprehensive and engaging digital experience through the integration of generative AI technology into the tournament coverage.
