Will Big Tech’s colossal AI spending destroy Europe’s data sovereignty?

Several major technology companies have reported earnings in recent weeks and provided estimates for their 2026 spending, as well as top analysts’ forecasts.

The data point that appears to have caught Wall Street’s attention the most is the estimated capital expenditure (CapEx) for this year, which together represents an investment of over $700 billion (€590 billion) in AI infrastructure.

That’s more than the entire nominal GDP in 2025 of Sweden, one of Europe’s largest economies, according to IMF estimates.

According to the US Semiconductor Industry Association, global chip sales are expected to reach $1 trillion (842 billion euros) for the first time this year.

Additionally, major banks and consulting firms such as JPMorgan Chase and McKinsey expect total AI investments to exceed $5 trillion (€4.2 trillion) by 2030, driven by “astronomical demand”…
