Throughout my career as a general practitioner and therapist, the doctor-patient relationship has been a source of anxiety and great satisfaction. And when I turned to writing fiction, my first novel dealt with exactly this topic, albeit from the perspective of a doctor in psychological distress.
Over the years I have undertaken further psychological training to improve my communication with and advice to patients and I now share what I have learned with medical students in my role as a facilitator at a medical school in Melbourne. I have always been aware of the incredible privilege of my work. The word “privilege” can be a double-edged sword: I use it here to express a sense of gratitude to patients for the trust they place in me. I never thought that my medical degree conferred privilege in a more negative sense.
I’m telling you all this because I feel the need to be open with readers about my personal opinion.
