On June 12, artificial intelligence (AI) laboratory Anthropic suspended access to its latest Claude models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5, which had been released three days earlier.
The move came in response to a U.S. government “export control policy” that prohibits the models from being used by people without U.S. citizenship.
Mythos is Anthropic’s most powerful or “frontier” model. When the model was first announced in April, the company said it was too good at hacking to release it right away. Instead, Mythos was made available to a handful of organizations (mainly US tech companies) to address vulnerabilities in key digital systems.
Fable is the same basic model, but with additional security measures designed to prevent it from being used for cybersecurity purposes. This was released to the public last week – and almost immediately discontinued.
